Phototherapy & Technology

Phototherapy, the use of light for healing, has been extensively researched during the past decade, and light’s curative properties are well documented. With growing interest in more “natural” therapeutics, awareness of phototherapy has grown. Mainstream consumer markets are accepting a new generation of effective medical devices that harness the healing power of light.

The rigorous investigation in LLNB light has proven that it alters a number of cellular processes, including protein synthesis, cell growth and differentiation, cell motility, membrane potential and binding affinities, neurotransmitter release, ATP synthesis, and others, similar to photosynthesis in plants..

Research indicates that light therapy:

Increases vascularity (circulation) by increasing the formation of new capillaries. New capillaries speed up the healing process by carrying more oxygen, nutrients needed for healing, and carrying waste products away.
Stimulates the production of collagen. Collagen is the most common protein found in the body. Collagen is the essential protein used to repair damaged tissue & replace old tissue.
Stimulates the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the major carrier of energy to cells. Increases in ATP allow cells to accept nutrients faster and get rid of waste products more effectively by increasing the energy level of the cell.
Increases lymphatic system activity. Research has shown that the lymph vessel diameter and the flow of the lymph system can be doubled with the use of light therapy. This means that both parts of edema (liquid and protein) can be evacuated at a much faster rate to relieve swelling.
Stimulates fibroblastic activity that aids in the repair process. Fibroblasts are present in connective tissue and are capable of forming collagen fibers.
Increases phagocytosis, the process of scavenging for and ingesting dead or degenerated cells by phagocyte cells for the purpose of clean-up. This is an important part of the infection fighting process.- Stimulates tissue granulation and connective tissue projections, which are part of the healing process of wounds, ulcers, or inflamed tissue.
Stimulates acetylcholine release. Acetylcholine causes cardiac inhibition, vasodilatation, gastrointestinal peristalsis, and other parasympathetic effects.

It has also been proven that narrow band light is crucial to the therapeutic effect; that is, the effects observed with narrow-band stimulation are absent with broad-spectrum light. Light in specific wavelengths strengthens macrophages, one of the primary healing agents in wound healing and burn repair, while eliminating the ophthalmologic and other risks associated with the use of lasers. Specifically, illumination of 630 & 660 nm has been shown to be effective in the healing of inflammation and wounds, while illumination of 940 nm is effective for the relief of pain.

What is phototherapy?

Phototherapy is a medical field where patients are treated with light illumination thus harnessing the biological effects of low-level narrow-band (LLNB) light. Today, phototherapy is used worldwide to treat ulcers, musculoskeletal injury, pain and inflammation.

Optics

Phototherapy initially involved soft lasers with output powers of less than 1 mW. Over the years technology has improved and powers have increased. Today treatments are performed with devices having output powers between 4-40 mW. Treatment times, however, have shortened; as powers have increased and the light exposure delivered to the treatment site are usually 1-4 J/cm2.

The characteristics of light illumination: coherency and monochromaticity have been examined in detail, and it is clear that coherency is not crucial because it degrades rapidly by scattering as the beam passes through the tissue. Monochromaticity also is not crucial however, it is vital as investigators have repeatedly shown that effects observed with narrow-band stimulation are absent with broad spectrum light. The optical "window" lies in the visible to infra-red portion of the spectrum, extending from 600 nm to 1300 nm and including most of the products used in phototherapy. In particular, 660 nm have been widely used in wound healing while 940 has been shown to be effective in pain relief.

Biological effects of LLNB light illumination

In recent years, phototherapy has been the subject of credible and rigorous scientific research both in the laboratory and in the clinic in order to delineate the mechanisms and clinical applications of phototherapy. The basic tenet of phototherapy is that LLNB light illumination has a wavelength and intensity-dependent capability to alter cellular behavior in the absence of significant heating thereby exerting various effects at the biochemical, cellular, histological, and functional levels.

The scientific rationale behind phototherapy is based on ample published scientific work which has found clear evidence that LLNB light alters cellular processes. These include protein synthesis, cell growth and differentiation, cell motility, membrane potential and binding affinities, neurotransmitter release and ATP synthesis, etc. The mitochondria, which is the main sub-cellular organelle responsible for the cell`s energy production, exhibit frequency-dependent action spectra and many scientists feel that the mitochondria is at the base of the phototherapeutic effects of LLNB light. The most intensively investigated clinical application of phototherapy is the acceleration of cutaneous and mucosal wound healing.

Safety

The power used in phototherapy is by definition to low to cause tissue damage and there have been no reports of adverse effects due to LLNB illumination. However, retinal hazard is a concern and avoidance of looking directly at the beam source seems prudent.

Google Chrome Browser Installing Error - Solution

Solution for problem installing Google Chrome browser.

I downloaded the Google Chrome browser from Google site but it kept having problem with initializing during the setup process, damn frustrating! this was the message that appearred :

Error message - "Installer download failed. Error code = 0x80072ee2."

After trying many many many many .... times (almost wanted to give up installing this head cracking Chrome Browser) and i also do not want to make any changes on my system because i am not a technical person, if it screws up i will be dead! (some recommended adding in "no sandbox" at the back of the .exe and changing some settings on registry).

Finally this "Offline Installer" works like a charm!

Cholesterol is a soft waxy substance found in our bloodstream and all our cells that the body produce naturally. Its function is to help form cell membranes, some hormones and is needed for other functions. About 75% of our cholesterol is made from our liver and other cells. The other 25% comes from the foods we eat.

You might be asking yourself, "If our bodies need it, then why has it become such a bad word?". It the excess of cholesterol in our bodies that poses a problem. Cholesterol levels that are too high can lead to coronary heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. There are 106.7 million Americans with borderline high and 37.2 million with high blood cholesterol levels.

Understanding Your Total Cholesterol:
Total cholesterol is the sum of all the cholesterol in the bloodstream. A cholesterol test will give you a reading of the level in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL). The higher the reading, the greater the risk for heart disease. A person with high blood cholesterol has more than twice the risk of heart disease than someone with a desirable level.

Desirable Level: less than 200mg/dL
Borderline High Risk: 200 – 239 mg/dL
High Risk: 240 mg/dL and above

Cholesterol and other fats cannot dissolve in the blood and therefore need to be moved from the cells by carriers. These special carriers are called lipoproteins. Though there are several types, the most focused on are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL = Bad Cholesterol
Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are the major cholesterol carriers in the blood. Too much LDL in circulation in the blood stream can build up in the artery walls. LDL also contributes to the thick, hard deposit formation of plaque that clogs arteries. The higher the level of LDL in your system, the higher the risk of heart disease.

High Level: 160 mg/dL and above
Low Level: less than100 mg/dL

HDL = Good Cholesterol
High density lipoproteins (HDL) help take cholesterol away from your arteries and carries it back to the liver to be removed from the body. Thus, it helps prevent cholesterol buildup in the artery walls. The higher the level of HDL in your system, the lower the risk of heart disease.

High Risk: less than 40 mg/dL
Protective Level: 60 mg/dL and above

Drop Size (in Microliters) - The amount of blood required for the glucose meter to accurately perform its test. The less blood a meter requires, the less painful and difficult it usually is.
Range (mg/dl) - The range of blood sugar levels the meter can read.
Test Time Seconds - The amount of time the glucose meter needs to complete its test. Shorter times can be more convenient, especially when away from home.
Strip - The brand or type of test strips the glucose meter uses. The type of strips a meter uses are very important, as differences in strip price over many years can greatly affect the cost of using a certain type of meter.
